It is a signing that carries the full weight of underground dance music history, and signals something genuinely exciting for the future of the label. Circulation, the seminal British tech-house project helmed by Paul Davis, makes a long-awaited and triumphant return with Sun Angel [EP], his debut release on D:STR:CT Records.
For those who know, the name Circulation needs little introduction. Originally formed in 1997 as a duo by Paul Davis and Matt Jackson, Circulation became one of the defining forces in the UK underground dance scene through the late 1990s and early 2000s. Davis, a record shop owner, soul and jazz enthusiast, and Jackson, an engineer forged in the fires of early 90s hardcore and progressive house, brought a rare alchemy to their collaboration. The result was a body of work that helped write the rule book for what tech-house could and should sound like.
Their legendary Colours series, released through the eponymous Circulation label, spanned over 45 EPs, almost all titled after colours, and became essential listening in the record bags of DJs who mattered. From ‘Green’, with its floating grooves and Detroit-style strings, to ‘Purple’, a massive club anthem championed by the likes of Timo Maas and Darren Emerson, Circulation’s releases were the sound of a movement finding its identity. At a time when ‘tech-house’ literally described the bridge between the funky grooves of house and the mechanical precision of techno, Circulation were the architects at that crossing point.
Their music was hypnotic, languid, deeply atmospheric, never chasing the big crescendo, always committed to mood and movement. It graced the floors of legendary clubs like Fabric and festivals such as Sonar, earning a devoted following that has never quite forgotten those hypnotic, colour-coded grooves.
After the duo parted ways in 2007, a 15-year silence followed. Then, in 2022, Paul Davis breathed new life into the project, reviving the Circulation name as a solo venture and launching the Recirculate label. His modern output, including releases on Sasha’s respected Last Night On Earth imprint, has been described as more cerebral and cinematic, while retaining the deep, danceable pulse that made Circulation essential in the first place. The artist has grown, evolved, and matured without losing what made the music matter.
Now, with Sun Angel [EP], Circulation finds a natural new home on D:STR:CT Records. This debut EP represents a beautiful convergence of heritage and forward motion, the rich legacy of one of Britain’s most influential underground acts meeting a label with the vision and credibility to carry that story into a new chapter. Sun Angel is atmospheric, intentional, and crafted with the unhurried confidence of an artist who has always let the music breathe.
This is more than a release. It is a reintroduction. And D:STR:CT Records could not be more proud to be the platform for it.
